Martial law, the term sends a chill up the spine of Americans, whether or not they think that it is a likely scenario, or a conspiracy theory. Hollywood has picked up on the trend, and as a result, movies set in an post-apocalyptic world where nothing makes sense, and everything is turned upside down. The idea of a military and government takeover, complete with suspension of our Constitution, may be hard to grasp for most people. For well over 2 centuries, we have lived in this constitutional republic, and have enjoyed the benefits that come with, the individual taking responsibility for governing himself, through election of representitives, and the presence of limited government. Most people believe, that the military would turn against a tyrant that ordered the revocation of god given rights.
But a closer look at human behavior, in times of crisis, may suggest otherwise. If a martial law scenario were to emerge, at least in modern times, it would be the result of a crisis, one that is staged or caused by the tyrannical government, directly or indirectly. Or, it may be something that happens, that sparks a response from the liberal lap dog media, that eventually blows it completely out of proportion and a snowball effect causes the whole thing to explode. How do human beings repsond when dealing with tragic, horrifying events? Let's look at November 22, 1963, Jackie Kennedy's response to her husband being shot in the head, as seen in the Zapruder film, was to crawl onto the back of the limo and grab pieces of her husbands'skull, only to prop back him up in his seat, so that she could attempt to put his head back together. This sounds illogical, but when Jackie Kennedy, gave testimony to the Warren Commission, on what she remembered, she stated that she did not remember crawling onto the back of the limo as she did, and essentially "blacked out". Which would explain the irrational behavior.
So the scenario, in which the complete breakdown of society, creates chaos, and mass social unrest, seems to fall into this category of surreal horror, and the human response to this is unpredictable. Just as a hypothetical, most military members, in this type of a scenario, may react as they are in a warzone, because in the stated hypothetical situation, this country may look like the middle east. It might not be hard to convince most servicemen that drastic measures need to be taken in such an extreme situation. Sure they may say, "no way, no how", at this point in time. But with no plan, and no preparation for such events, will they follow orders, due to the fact they they will have nothing else to go on? I'm not advocating this, I am one that believes, that when you take the oath, to defend the Constitution, that you hold to that oath until you take your last breath. I am just trying to play devil's advocate and bring attention to the fact that human behavior is not always predictable, and sometimes we inadvertently resort to a contingency plan, due to the nature of the task before us. A martial law scenario would be the end of America as we know it, and I hope that it never gets to that point. We need to remain educated and forever vigilant, to prevent this type of event from taking place, and being successful. The President will not allow a good crisis to go to waste. He is preparing for the day America falls apart and he will seize the opportunity. The citizens of this country need to have similar preparations.
